Submissions
Hinkler Books is an innovative book publisher and packager - creating and producing books for publishers and specialist retail accounts around the world. Hinkler is a specialist in non-fiction for adults and children. We do not publish any fiction, poetry or children's picture books.
As a specialist book publisher/packager, we are unable to pay similar royalties to those paid by traditional book publishers; we primarily work on a work-for-hire basis with authors and illustrators. Of course, we are always on the look-out for new ideas, illustrators and authors and would be interested in hearing from you.
Hinkler do not accept any unsolicited submissions. We will consider a query letter describing your project or talent and, if we are interested in pursuing your idea, we will contact you for more information.
Should you wish to submit a query:
- Simply fax, e-mail, or send us a letter of no more than a page in length. Your letter should briefly describe your project, the market whom your project is aimed at, other existing books that relate to your project (or compete with it), why you are qualified to write the book, and why you think it is an ideal project for Hinkler.
- Do not send any additional materials. If we are interested in pursuing the project we will contact you for these. Any additional materials you send with your query will be disposed of.
- We will answer your query letters, but will not return these
- Send your letter to us via one of these methods:
Email: editor@hinkler.com.au
Fax: 613 9558 2566
Mail: Editorial Submission

If we are interested in discussing your project further, we will ask you to send a more formal proposal, including:
- A one page cover letter briefly describing your project
- A detailed outline of the project
- An introduction and sample chapter/text excerpt (approximately 1,500 words in length)
- Photocopies of sample illustrations/photos, to support your idea
- A brief analysis of any competing books, including the title, author, publisher, together with an explanation of how your book differs from the competition.
- A brief author/illustrator biography that outlines your own publishing history and credentials.
- A self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of your materials.
We do not accept any original materials, so please send a copy of your manuscript and copies of any illustration or reference material. Please note that any materials you send will not be returned to you unless you enclose a self-addressed envelope stamped with the correct postage.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
